Pension files compiled by the Indian War Veterans of the North Pacific Coast and lawyer Thomas Alexander Wood to determine applicant's eligibility for pension benefits. Files include pension application or declaration of widow; correspondence and affidavits verifying Indian war service or current marital status of widow, as well as letters from T.A. Wood and governmental agencies updating the progress of the application. Information includes applicant's full name, birth date and place, occupation, height, weight, hair and eye color, spouse's name, and specific facts concerning the veteran's military service. Some applications were filed by Indians who served as scouts for the Oregon Volunteers during the North Pacific Coast Indian Wars.

Thomas Alexander Wood was born in Montgomery County, Illinois on March 1, 1837. In 1852, he crossed the plains to Oregon, but returned east later to study for the ministry. In 1862, he married and returned to Oregon where he worked various jobs until accepting the Methodist pastorate in Roseburg. The Indian War Veterans of the North Pacific Coast was formed "to keep alive the memories of the trials of pioneer life, to encourage friendship and benevolence among those who have acted as the vanguard of civilization, to transmit a true history of the Indian wars of the North Pacific Coast ..."
